About the Producer
It’s been a while since we’ve featured wines from Portugal, so we’re thrilled to welcome Quinta da Raza to the portfolio! This historic estate, dating back to 1769, is located in the heart of the Basto sub-region of Vinho Verde, about an hour north of Porto.
At the helm today is Diogo Teixeira, the fifth generation of his family to run the property, alongside his wife Mafalda, who joined him in 2008. Together, they steward nearly 50 hectares of vineyards, divided into 14 distinct plots dedicated to native Portuguese grape varieties — Azal, Padeiro, Vinhão, Arinto, Trajadura, and more — all cultivated with a deep commitment to sustainability and biodiversity.
The Basto sub-region sits further inland than most of Vinho Verde, with less Atlantic influence and a warmer, drier climate that brings out a unique ripeness and character in the wines. The soils here are predominantly pure granite, with touches of clay and schist, lending freshness and minerality to the wines.
One of Quinta da Raza’s true treasures is the Azal grape, which thrives in their valley and is rarely found elsewhere in the world. You’ll find it showcased beautifully in their Vicinus White, a vibrant expression of this nearly exclusive variety.
Beyond the vineyards, the estate is alive with an organic garden and traditional Portuguese farm animals — Pedrês chickens, capons, ducks, and Bísaro pigs — underscoring the family’s holistic approach to land stewardship and authenticity.
With its rich history, sustainable philosophy, and native varieties, Quinta da Raza represents the next exciting chapter in our exploration of Portugal’s dynamic wines.
